Richmond Goodwill Find $3.99 Vase Sells for Astounding $107,100 in Surprise Auction

Jessica Vincent noticed a glass vase right away as she pulled into a Goodwill store in Richmond, Virginia. The brushstrokes of green and burgundy covered the massive 13-inch vase. She saw the single word Murano etched on the bottom.

“I was thrilled to see it was only $3.99 when we got to the checkout—I was ready to pay $8 or $9 for it.”

The buyer studied the vase as soon as she arrived home and posted a picture of it on a Facebook group dedicated to Murano glass, where “everyone was excited about it.”

Vincent was able to recognize the vase as an extremely rare creation by renowned Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa with the aid of the Facebook community. The 1940s vase is from his “Pennellate” collection, which he created for the Murano glass factory Venini. Pennellate is the Italian word for “brush strokes”.

Instead of accepting a $10,000 bid from a Facebook group member, Vincent contacted Wright Auction House in New York. She didn’t have to wait long to speak with Wright Auction House founder Richard Wright on the phone.

Vincent carried on her narrative:

“He gave us a nice phone call and described the rarity of this object. Following that, Wright’s glass experts, Sara [Blumberg] and Jim [Oliveira], took a car to Richmond. They verified it, and I got chills right then.

Wright’s Important Italian Glass sale included 33 pieces, including Vincent’s vase that went up for auction. Scarpa’s Pennellate treasure went up for bid for $24,000. Vincent claimed that as the numbers continued to rise, she and her companion watched with tears in their eyes. Although they expected the price to end around $60,000 or $70,000, it continued.

Vincent paid $3.99 for a vase at Goodwill, and it went on to sell for an incredible $107,100. The winning bid exceeded the upper limit of the auction house’s estimate by about $50,000. Vincent gasped.

“A testament to the beauty and rarity of mid-century Murano glass,” according to Richard Wright, was the sale.

The Rock Tavern, New York warehouse where Williams works has a flyer at the bottom that employees spotted. Peccy is an orange blob-like creature that represents the internet shopping behemoth.
